Surround Yourself with People Who Give You Energy

Because some people recharge you — and others quietly drain you

Have you ever noticed how you feel after spending time with certain people?

Sometimes you leave a conversation buzzing with ideas, excitement, and clarity — like your inner battery just got recharged. Other times, you walk away feeling inexplicably tired, irritated, or flat.

That’s not a coincidence. It’s energy exchange.

Every interaction you have either fuels or depletes your emotional and mental energy. And over time, those interactions shape your motivation, your mindset, and even your sense of purpose.

The Hidden Energy Equation

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles found that emotions are contagious — your brain literally mirrors the emotional states of people around you through something called emotional contagion.

When you spend too much time with negative, cynical, or constantly complaining people, your brain begins to sync with their stress patterns. On the other hand, spending time with optimistic, curious, and grounded people elevates your mood, thinking, and even creativity.

It’s like being around someone who radiates warmth versus someone who carries a storm cloud — your nervous system always knows the difference.

Energy Givers vs. Energy Takers

There are generally two kinds of people in your life:

  • Energy Givers: They inspire, encourage, and expand you. They listen deeply, celebrate your wins, and help you see possibilities when you can’t.

  • Energy Takers (or Vampires): They drain you. They complain, criticize, or bring constant drama. After spending time with them, your battery goes from 80% to 5%.

And here’s the truth most people avoid: sometimes we are the takers.

When we’re stressed, insecure, or burned out, we unintentionally pull energy instead of giving it. Recognizing that helps us shift from draining others to being a source of energy ourselves.

As Jim Rohn famously said:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

That’s not just a catchy line — it’s neuroscience in action.

Become What You Want to Attract

Here’s the deeper truth: you don’t just attract energy — you transform it or keep it in motion.

If you want to be surrounded by kind, driven, uplifting people, you have to become that kind of person first.  You attract what you radiate.

When you show up with curiosity, gratitude, and optimism, you naturally pull others who vibrate on that same frequency. The opposite is also true — if you constantly complain, gossip, or live in negativity, you’ll find yourself surrounded by more of the same.

Energy alignment works like gravity. The higher you raise your own vibration, the more naturally positive people come into your orbit.

So instead of only asking, “Who gives me energy?” also ask,  “What kind of energy am I giving?”

Be a Person of Value

Becoming an energy giver isn’t about being relentlessly cheerful or pretending everything’s fine — it’s about being genuinely valuable to others.

That might mean:

  • Listening without judgment.

  • Offering help without expecting anything in return.

  • Celebrating others’ success as if it were your own.

  • Sharing ideas, inspiration, or simply presence that uplifts.

When you focus on adding value — not seeking validation — people will naturally want to be around you.

As Albert Einstein once said:

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”

When you’re a person of value, you don’t need to chase relationships. You attract them.

Two Questions That Can Change Everything

  1. Who are the people I spend most of my time with?  Think about the five to ten people who occupy your mental and emotional space. Do they lift you up or pull you down?

  2. Who am I becoming through these interactions?  You’re either becoming lighter or heavier, clearer or more confused. Every relationship shapes you — pay attention to the direction.

Final Reflection

Your energy is your most valuable asset. It drives how you think, create, love, and lead.

So surround yourself with people who make you feel alive, not drained. People who bring peace, not drama. Growth, not gossip.

And most importantly — be that person for others.

When you protect your energy and cultivate the right environment, your mindset shifts, your goals expand, and your life starts to align in ways that feel almost effortless.

Because in the end, protecting your energy isn’t about isolation — it’s about elevation.

As Oprah Winfrey beautifully put it:

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.”
